The results of the DIHK (Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce) business survey at the beginning of 2026 clearly show that the German economy continues to face significant structural challenges. While there are positive developments in individual sectors, these are insufficient to generate broad-based economic momentum.
Geopolitical uncertainties, high operating costs, and weak domestic demand continue to weigh noticeably on many companies. Consequently, overall economic development remains subdued. The survey, in which around 26,000 companies from all sectors and regions participated, reveals that the German economy is operating in a challenging environment that requires profound structural adjustments.
At the same time, international competition is intensifying as a result of global transformations. Against this backdrop, the DIHK emphasizes the need for consistent reforms to sustainably strengthen Germany's competitiveness and enable new growth opportunities.
The complete results of the DIHK Business Survey 2026 are available on the DIHK website. Please note that the website content is primarily in German. However, the full survey report can be downloaded in English. Detailed data, graphics, industry and regional analyses, as well as methodological background information are also accessible there.
An English-language press is available separately and can be accessed here.
