In many multinationals, IT policies are often set at headquarters to ensure that serve as the foundational, mandatory, and centralized framework designed to secure an organization's digital assets, ensure regulatory compliance, and align technology usage with business goals. However, as awareness of digital sovereignty is growing among governments, businesses, and consumers, policies are being enacted that are in direct conflict with IT policies set at the respective headquarters. Furthermore, we're seeing a divergence of digital business goals of multinationals and their customers who wish to adapt national sovereignty policies for their own data security and business goals.

China sits at the forefront of these discussion as it has embedded digital sovereignty in government procurement rules and data security regulations. There are stringent rules concerning data security, cross-border data flows, and personal data protections. While IT departments at multinationals that are globally diversified may choose to exclude China from their digital offerings, they may do so at their own peril as sooner or later other jurisdictions will follow China's lead.

Hence, getting China right with regards to a digital strategy, will bring a competitive advantage to any organization that wishes to compete globally.
