The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1665, is the oldest as well as one of the largest among the 79 German Chambers of Commerce. As an independent selfgoverning body of the Hamburg business community, the Chamber represents the interests of about 160,000 member firms giving work to all in all 800,000 employees. In common with the other Chambers of Commerce in Germany, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce is a public-law entity with compulsory membership. The federal government in Berlin guarantees its selfgoverning status, but it receives no government funding. The acting President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce is Tobias Bergmann, its Chief Executive Officer is Christi Degen. The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce has representative offices in St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad (Russian Federation), Shanghai, Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and Mumbai (India).
