Environmental Protection and Sustainability Promotion Services

econet is the German Chambers of Commerce worldwide network’s (AHK) brand to promote German know-how, products and solutions in the field of environmental protection and sustainability. Our activities include product promotion and know-how transfer, business matching and co-operation through networking activities, lobbying as well as cross border and regional co-operation in Greater China. In view of the massive challenges the Hong Kong SAR is facing with the disposal of municipal solid waste, much of our attention is focussed on this area. Another aspect of particular relevance is building energy efficiency, owing to the fact, that buildings take the biggest share of energy consumption in Hong Kong. Last not least we handle enquiries from local and overseas companies, we do business matching, and participate in various local sustainability initiatives.

econet Activities
Major infrastructure projects on our agenda this business year included the sludge incinerator, where several German companies are contract parties. When operating at full capacity 3,000 tonnes of sludge will be treated daily, thus significantly reducing the burden on the capacity of the landfills, which will be saturated soon. Furthermore, a German bidder has participated in a tender to build and operate an electronic waste recycling facility in Hong Kong. Our office supported the German bidder with advice, network contacts and lobbying. The contract has yet to be awarded. Meanwhile, we endeavoured to raise the level of awareness of the German packaging ordinance in the territory and the need for proper licensing for the disposal of transport and sales packaging in Germany as offered by our partner Landbell AG.
